Hippeastrum bloom event - Red Garden

Hippeastrum 'Red Garden' is a lovely miniature Hippeastrum that produces clumps of smallish, sort of daffodil sized bulbs in what is known as a 'klister'. Two or three flower spikes might be produced per bulb, resulting in quite an impressive show. Only one flower scape on this occasion, though. I have several colours in this 'garden' series (yellow, striped and white). I divided up the clumps to get them planted and rooted so its nice to see blooms. Expect lots of Hippeastrum pictures in future!

    1. My papilio came off eBay. Be warned though, it can be a shy bloomer.

    1. Mine came from Royal Colors, but they don't seem to have it listed this year. Might be worth sending them an email, though. Maybe keep an eye on eBay?

    3. Sadly, a lot of my Hippeastrum have been really hammered by mealy bugs recently, and I only got two flowers out of red garden :-( I'm spraying with pure soap now though, and it does seem to kill them.

  3. Sorry to hear that .What do you mean by pure soap? Washing up liquid?

  4. Hi, Tina,

No, not washing up liquid. Washing up liquid contains detergents too, which shouldn't really be put on plants (though I know people do do that, with no ill-effects). Pure soap is harder to find, but it is worth looking for. It has no perfume or anything, and seems to work by softening the water and drowning the bugs. I ordered it online. Look for 'soap flakes'. I found a liquid version which is easier to dilute into a spray bottle.

    1. I use the soap spray, but really if there is spider mite, the best control is to increase humidity and air movement.
